Solar Energy, Soil Improvement and Environmental Protection

Hello! My name is Erin and this is my new energy and environmental care blog. I am a big believer in the responsibility of man to care for the environment. For too long, human beings have brought decay and destruction to the natural world. When I finally moved out of my parent's house last year, the first thing I wanted to do was to make sure my new home was an environmentally friendly as it could be. I called in a contractor who helped me to assess the quality of the soil, to install solar panels and to carry out an energy assessment rating on the property. Since then, my bills have fallen and my carbon footprint has shrunken in size. I learnt a lot during this process which I would like to share here.

Critical Facts About Fire Extinguisher Application

by Maurice Ruiz

Fire extinguishers are some of the most critical firefighting equipment a business can have. Depending on the type of extinguishing agent in a fire extinguisher, the devices can put off various fire types. Thus, a commercial facility must buy and install fire extinguishers even if other firefighting equipment, such as sprinklers, are present. That said, some fire wardens don't understand much about fire extinguishers, which could be catastrophic during a fire incident. This article highlights critical facts that every fire warden must know regarding fire extinguisher use.

Different Fire Extinguishers, Same Facility — One of the most confusing aspects of buying and installing fire extinguishers is that they are not one-size-fits-all firefighting equipment. Notably, fire experts advise businesses to purchase fire extinguishers based on the type of fire they might encounter. For instance, the most common fires in commercial kitchens are gasoline, oil and grease-based. Thus, Class B fire extinguishers are the most suitable for such establishments. However, the reality is that most commercial facilities can suffer from different types of fires. Consequently, it is safer to purchase various kinds of fire extinguishers to ensure that an entire commercial facility is covered in the event of a fire. For instance, you can buy a Class B fire extinguisher for a restaurant kitchen and Class C fire extinguishers for guest rooms.

Aim Nozzle to a Fire's Base — The effectiveness of a fire extinguisher mainly depends on the way you use it in case of a fire. Most people point a fire extinguisher directly over a fire hoping that the agent will cover and put off the flame. However, fire extinguishers work differently if efficiency is anything to go by. Notably, you might use all the extinguishing agent in the container if you aim for the flames, and the chances are high that you will fail to put off the fire. The most effective way to use a fire extinguisher is to aim the nozzle directly at the base. You target the fuel source by aiming for a fire's base, which stops the flames from spreading.

Discharged Fire Extinguishers are Ineffective — Although you can use fire extinguishers to put off small fires, it diminishes the extinguishing agent in the container. Unfortunately, many people don't understand the idea and return discharged fire extinguishers to the wall. Notably, extinguishers that have already been discharged are less effective at putting off new and bigger fires. In this regard, it is advisable to recharge a fire extinguisher every time you use it to ensure the device is ready when you need it the most.
